Maggio 1978: Leonard Nimoy (Spock) avverte che molti climatologi ritengono che il mondo si stia avviando verso una glaciazione.

Uno dei climatologi consultati era Stephen Schneider, poi divenuto consulente di Al Gore. Gli domandarono cosa si poteva fare per scongiurare la glaciazione e lui rispose che sarebbe stato sconsiderato usare l’energia atomica per rendere meno compatte le calotte polari: “Possiamo fare queste cose? Sì. Ma faranno migliorare le cose? Non ne sono sicuro. Non possiamo prevedere con certezza cosa sta succedendo al nostro futuro climatico. Come possiamo intervenire se siamo così ignoranti? Si potrebbero sciogliere le calotte polari e cosa succederebbe alle città costiere? La cura potrebbe essere peggiore del male. Sarebbe meglio o peggio del rischio di un’era glaciale?”

Col passare degli anni pare abbia perso questo suo equilibrio e rigore, per diventare un iper-interventista, allo scopo inverso (bloccare il riscaldamento globale).
